San Marcos has all the ingredients for a great lifestyle

Among rolling foothills, located a few miles from the coast is the growing North city of San Marcos. This vibrant community has a population of approximately 80,000. While it has experienced rapid growth over the last decade, San Marcos maintains a small-town atmosphere that has attracted many new residents. With local colleges, new shopping centers and great dining, San Marcos offers a great lifestyle for the people that live here.

"The city of San Marcos has done a really great job as far as planning," said Mary-Glenn Malone. She and her husband have lived here for 22 years, raising their two children who attend local high schools. "They've always looked to the future to plan for needs 20 years out and the city has done a lot of the infrastructure to handle that growth when it comes."

According to Zillo real estate prices in August 2017 for single-family homes in the San Marcos ZIP codes of 92069 and 92078 are $524,500 and $582,800 respectively.

"San Marcos is becoming known the educational hub of North County," said Malone. One of her daughters attends San Marcos High School. The other daughter attends High Tech High, an innovative charter school located in San Marcos known for its small-school settings, where students learn through projects, internships and interaction with professionals.

Cal State San Marcos was built on a 304-acre hillside and founded in 1989. It has approximately 9,000 students and offers 44 undergraduate programs, 10 graduate programs and one doctorate in education.

A few miles to the north on a hillside there is a large "P" that can be seen from miles away. This is where you'll find Palomar College, a public two-year community college with approximately 30,000 full-time and part-time students. The University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences is also located in San Marcos. It is a physical and occupational therapy graduate institution that provides its students with the knowledge to become skilled clinicians.

San Marcos has many great places to eat. In the heart of the city, Old California Restaurant Row has a large concentration of restaurants offering a variety of cuisines. The newer Grand Plaza also has many restaurant options. Restaurants you can find in San Marcos include Applebee, Panera Bread, Chins Schezwan, Boudin San Francisco, Elephant Bar, Sammy's Woodfired Pizza, PeiWei, Phil's BBQ, Churchill's Pub & Grille and Dalton's Roadhouse.

From Nordstrom to Guitar Center, you can shop for everything you need in San Marcos. Area shopping centers include The Grand Plaza, Nordahl Marketplace, San Marcos Shopping Plaza and Lake San Marcos Shopping Center. On either side of the 78 freeway there are an abundance of furniture and home improvement stores including Lowes, Home Depot, Bassett Furniture, Thomasville, Jerome's, Plummers, Ethan Allen, Mor Furniture, and Design Source Gallery. Shopping is one of the major attractions for visitors to San Marcos.

Just a few miles from the coast, the weather here is hard to beat. When it's foggy along the coast it's often sunny in San Marcos making it pleasant to enjoy miles of trails designed for walking, jogging and biking throughout the city. There is easy freeway access to all that San Diego County has to offer and Downtown San Diego is only 35 miles away. With great schools, shopping, weather, and dining San Marcos has all the ingredients that make living enjoyable.
