North Park – renaissance of artful urban living

North Park sign
This sign stands in the middle of University Avenue, one-half block west of 30th Street, in the heart of North Park.

North Park is a neighborhood of mixed architectural styles from many eras. Along with the surrounding neighborhoods of Hillcrest and South Park, this area is blossoming as a new wave of urbanites move along with trendy cafes, restaurants, boutiques and art galleries.

One area of note is lined with beautiful, and turn-of-the-century Craftsman Bungalows and California Bungalows, some of with have been restored to their original splendor. Because many of the homes were designed by renowned architect and builder David Owen Dryden, the area has been designated the Dryden Historic District. Another example of period architecture is the Silver Gate Masonic Temple and the Georgia Street Bridge. Charles and Edward Quayle designed the Masonic Temple, which is an impressive example of the "zigzag" style of Art Deco, with its elaborate Egyptian motifs. The Georgia Street Bridge on University Ave., used reinforced concrete columns and spandrel arches that reflect the Mission Revival style. The 100-year-old bridge is a designated state and national historic landmark.

To round out the variety of interesting construction is the raised water tank on Howard St., which was built in 1924 to hold water pumped from wells in Mission Valley. In 1946 the historic Lafayette Hotel was completed with big name bands entertaining Hollywood celebrities and "the cream of San Diego" in the ritzy Mississippi Room. The main building contained hotel rooms, twenty shops, four dining rooms, a patio terrace for dining and dancing, and a pool designed by Johnny Weissmuller, who starred in the movie Tarzan.
