Loma Portal – gateway to a San Diego gem

Loma Portal is a quiet San Diego coastal community that borders Mission Bay to the north, Old Town to the northeast and the beautiful downtown San Diego skyline and the bay across to Coronado; on a clear day, you can see Mexico. Loma is the Spanish word for hill so the original name of the peninsula was La Punta de la Loma de San Diego, translated as Hill Point of San Diego. Loma Portal (from Latin porta "gate") is the gate to Point Loma. Enough history.

Loma Portal is one of San Diego's most multifarious neighborhoods, with its wide variety in architectural designs. "There are some really neat houses, older unique homes," says Sara Massey of Redfin, a real estate brokerage. You will see classic California bungalows alongside beautiful multi-million dollars homes, all fitting together nicely, with styles including Tudor, Spanish mission, mission revival, arts and crafts and modern/art deco.

The streetlights, positioned in the center of neighborhood intersections, are evidence of a bygone era.

Though Loma Portal is a relatively small, pie shaped area with Rosecrans Street, Nimitz Boulevard and Midway Drive forming the rough boundaries, the new homebuyer can find a wide range of properties to meet their target price.

Loma Portal is home to Point Loma High School (PLHS), Dana Middle School, and several elementary schools. PLHS is the third-oldest high school in the San Diego Unified School District. It was dedicated in 1925 as Point Loma Junior-Senior High school. The school also holds the distinction of having produced two major-league baseball pitchers who threw perfect games - David Wells and Don Larsen. The community of Loma Portal has been around for quite a while and has seen its share of history. During the 1920s there was a dirt airstrip known as Dutch Flats in what is now the Midway neighborhood was where Charles Lindbergh first tested and flew his airplane, The Spirit of St. Louis. The neighborhood also includes the James Edgar and Jean Jessop Hervey Point Loma Branch Library, which opened in 2003, replacing a smaller public library. The area is primarily residential, with a neighborhood business and retail center located on Voltaire Street.

Loma Portal is known throughout San Diego for its holiday decorations and a neighborhood-wide lighting of luminarias occurs each Christmas Eve in the Plumosa Park area. Another distinctive feature of this neighborhood is the location of streetlights, which are placed in the middle of street intersections instead of on the sidewalks, perhaps as evidence of an older and quieter time.

Speaking of quiet, Loma Portal lies directly in the takeoff pattern for planes from Lindbergh Field, but the "Quieter Home Program" to retrofit homes, was started in the summer of 1999 to help mitigate airport noise. The FAA and the Airport Authority cover the program so there are no financial cost to the homeowners for sound reduction treatments on doors and windows and many of the homes have been refitted. "For homeowners it becomes white noise," says Redfin's Masey. "And just like other areas around town, the residents get used to it."

Ocean breezes, spectacular views and a neighborhood featuring a variety of architectural styles, Loma Portal is a unique community with a small town feel and deep roots.
