Fletcher Hills enjoys convenience and suburban bliss

The area of Fletcher Hills was first developed by Ed Fletcher in the late 1920s. Fletcher was a San Diego politician who was a California Senator and also served as a director of the 1915 Panama-California Exposition. For a neighborhood as established as Fletcher Hills, I was surprised to find such a meager entry for it on Wikipedia. The "wiki" in its entirety stated: "The name Fletcher Hills refers to a neighborhood near San Diego, California which lies primarily in the city of El Cajon and partially in La Mesa. The area was developed in 1927-1928 by San Diego developer Ed Fletcher."

While the wiki doesn't make this place sound like much, for residents of Fletcher Hills, it's a great neighborhood. "One of the best things about living here is its close proximity to almost everything," said Marti Kilby, a local resident.

Fletcher Hills is a suburban area of east San Diego County, located on the north and south sides of Fletcher Parkway. And as stated in Wikipedia, Fletcher Hills is partially in the cities of La Mesa and El Cajon. "It's very easy to get on Interstate 8 or the 125 Freeway to get to the 94 Freeway," said Kilby.

As a real estate agent with the Myers Real Estate, as well as a long-time resident, Kilby is very familiar with home values in the area.

The 130-foot high water tower in Fletcher Hills serves the Helix Water District, which includes La Mesa, El Cajon, Lemon Grove, the community of Spring Valley, and other areas of San Diego County.

Fletcher Hills is a very desirable area because of its many custom homes, large lots, proximity to freeways, shopping and good schools. There are a lot of beautiful canyon areas and many homes have great views. Depending on which side of a hill you are on, there are sunset views to the west and mountain views to the east. While Fletcher Hills does have some condos and apartments, the neighborhood is mostly single-family homes. There are a lot of homes that are in the low $300,000s range. At the higher end there are beautiful custom homes that are going to be in the $700,000s range. And there is a little bit of everything in between.

Beef n Bun Fletcher Hills
The Been 'n Bun is a local favorite for hamburgers and milk shakes.

"A nice thing about the area is there are a lot of custom homes which can be purchased in the $500,000 range. There are not as many cookie-cutter neighborhoods," Kilby said. Many of the homes that were built mid-century have been recently be upgraded by the owners.

The location offers plenty of shopping options. The Fletcher Hills Town & Country Shopping Center includes a Vons, CVS, Starbucks and all the essentials. Major shopping center destinations include the Grossmont Shopping Center (5500 Grossmont Center Dr.) and Westfield Plaza (415 Parkway Plaza). A small business along Fletcher Parkway that is popular with locals is the Beef 'N Bun, a restaurant that serves classic hamburgers and milk shakes. Next door is another favorite, the Bottle Shop, a liquor store famous for its great deli sandwiches.

"Pretty much everything is close at hand," said Kilby. "It's just a very nice community."
